On this Day Tour from Auckland, you will depart the Downtown Ferry Terminal in one of our luxury air-conditioned Mercedes as we drive south across the Hauraki Plains to our first stop in Thames, at the southwestern end of the Coromandel Peninsula. Here you can enjoy a cup of coffee and marvel at many of the original mid-late 19th-century buildings when the town was amalgamated from 2 historic towns, Grahamstown and Shortland.
Then we head up the eastern coast side of the Firth of Thames. This is arguably one of the most scenic coastal roads in New Zealand and will take your breath away with its spectacular views as we wind our way through the numerous quaint coastal towns. Lots of opportunities to stop en route for photos before we head inland to the summit with another stop and the most awe-inspiring 360 views over the Hauraki Gulf.
We then descend past the mussel farms to the Coromandel Township dating back to 1820 when the HMS Coromandel arrived to pick up kauri spars. You will have ample time here to explore this compact historic town and buy some lunch before we head to the Driving Creek Railway. Here you will climb aboard the train for a captivating railway journey as you are inspired by Barry Brickell’s lifetime passion to bring Art, Conservation and Engineering together to create this magical train ride through plush native vegetation. You will travel over viaducts and through tunnels until you finally arrive at the top, aptly named Eyefull Tower, with a spectacular look out over the regenerating kauri, rimu and ferns towards Coromandel township and the Hauraki Gulf.
You will have time to explore the Driving Creek Railway pottery and local craft store before we leave the township of Coromandel for the Coromandel Ferry Terminal and your return by Fullers Ferries on your journey past many of the islands of the Hauraki Gulf back to the Ferry Terminal in Downtown Auckland.
